NEMA Launches 2026 National Essay Competition with ₦3 million Prize Pool


The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has announced its 2026 National Essay Competition, offering a total prize pool of ₦3 million for nine winners across three categories. 

  • The initiative aims to increase awareness and engagement in disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, and emergency response among young Nigerians.
  • The competition is open to secondary school students, undergraduates in tertiary institutions, and NYSC Emergency Management Volunteers. 

Each group has a specific essay topic and word limit: secondary school students will write on “My Role in Disaster Risk Reduction” (up to 500 words), undergraduates on “Climate Change and Disaster Management in Nigeria” (up to 1,000 words), and NYSC volunteers on “Technology for Disaster Response: Opportunities and Challenges” (up to 1,000 words).

Prizes for each category include:

  • ₦500,000 for 1st place, 
  • ₦300,000 for 1st runner-up, and 
  • ₦200,000 for 2nd runner-up, bringing the total for each category to ₦1 million. 

How to Apply 

Participants are required to submit original essays via email to: 

nemaessay@nema.gov.ng 

by Tuesday, April 15, 2026. 

Submissions should be in Word format, using Times New Roman font, size 12, and include the contestant’s full name, category, and details of their school or NYSC deployment.

  • Essays will be evaluated on topic relevance, originality, and clarity of structure.
  • The competition reflects NEMA’s commitment to fostering a culture of preparedness and equipping young Nigerians with knowledge and skills to respond effectively to emergencies and climate-related challenges.
