Code for Africa AI for Good Fellowship 2026 ($500/Month Stipend + Mentorship)
Applications are now open for the 2026 AI for Good Fellowship, offered by Code for Africa under the Digitalize Youth consortium.
- The program is designed for African technologists to apply artificial intelligence in strengthening the work of Human Rights Defender (HRD) organizations across the continent.
- The fellowship will support six technologists to collaborate with HRDs in the Sahel and neighbouring regions in West and East Africa, using AI tools to address real-world social and civic challenges.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must demonstrate strong technical experience in building AI-driven solutions, particularly using tools such as large language models, natural language processing, or data analytics.
- They should have proven experience working on social impact projects, including civic technology, public-interest tools, or community-based solutions.
- Candidates are expected to show data fluency, design thinking skills, and the ability to prototype and scale solutions in resource-constrained environments.
- A strong commitment to ethical AI practices, including fairness, transparency, and inclusivity, is essential.
- Applicants must be fluent in English, French, or Arabic and demonstrate clear ties to African communities.
- Familiarity with open-source tools and collaboration with civil society or policymakers will be an added advantage.
The fellowship is open to candidates connected to countries including Senegal, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and others within the region.
Benefits
Selected fellows will receive a monthly stipend of $500 over a four-month period.
- They will gain access to mentorship and technical support from CfA’s TechLab, DataLab, and AI Sandbox, as well as guidance from global experts, civil society leaders, and policymakers.
- Participants will collaborate with regional networks, including organisations working in climate resilience, public health, and digital rights, creating opportunities for real-world testing and scaling of solutions.
- Fellows will also develop impactful deliverables such as AI prototypes, research briefs, and scalable intervention plans, with opportunities to present their work to local and global audiences.
Programme impact
Fellows will work directly with HRD organisations to co-design AI tools such as multilingual research assistants, systems for analysing large datasets, tools for tracking misinformation, and workflow automation solutions that enhance civic engagement.
