WASH Coordinator at Community Engagement & Social Development Initiative (CESDI)


Community Engagement & Social Development Initiative (CESDI) is a non-governmental organization committed to the sustainable livelihood of under privileged women, children and youth. 

  • CESDI is duly registered with the Nigerian Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) since 2014. 

Responsibility 

Lead the planning, implementation, and monitoring of all WASH activities including construction and promotion of latrines, hygiene promotion campaigns, and sanitation improvement initiatives.

  • Apply and adapt community-based hygiene and sanitation approaches including Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) methodology.
  • Oversee hygiene awareness and education campaigns, including menstrual hygiene management (MHM) activities targeting women, girls, and schools.
  • Conduct regular field visits to supervise WASH activities and provide technical guidance to project staff and community volunteers.
  • Coordinate with local government WASH departments, state ministries, community leaders, and other stakeholders on WASH programming.
  • Ensure WASH activities are integrated with other project components including MHPSS, livelihoods, and social cohesion.
  • Support the preparation of WASH activity plans, procurement specifications, and bills of quantities for infrastructure works.
  • Oversee WASH data collection and contribute to project MEL systems, including tracking WASH indicators and preparing reports.
  • Facilitate capacity building of community WASH committees, hygiene promoters, and local structures.
  • Mainstream gender equality, protection, and disability inclusion into all WASH interventions.
  • Identify WASH-related needs through assessments and contribute to project design and proposal development.
  • Ensure proper documentation of WASH activities, community feedback, and lessons learned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in environmental health, Public Health, Civil/Water Engineering, WASH Engineering, or a related technical field.

Minimum of 4 years of hands-on WASH programming experience, preferably in humanitarian or development settings.

  • Demonstrated experience implementing PHAST, CLTS (Community-Led Total Sanitation), or similar community-based hygiene and sanitation approaches.
  • Experience in latrine construction, WASH infrastructure supervision, and community mobilization for WASH.
  • Prior experience working in Northeast Nigeria or conflict/fragile settings is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with gender-sensitive WASH programming and menstrual hygiene management.
  • Experience working with NGOs and INGOs, or consortium-managed projects.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong community engagement and facilitation skills.
  • Proficiency in report writing and documentation in English.
  • Ability to use basic data collection tools (KoboToolbox, ODK).
  • Knowledge of local context, cultural sensitivities, and languages (Hausa) is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel extensively to field sites across Damaturu and Fune LGAs.

Location: Damaturu, Yobe State, Northeast Nigeria

Contract Duration: 23 Months (Fixed Term)
